Coffee with Karavan Press
You are invited to the first of six planned gatherings this year where you can chat to me, Karina, founder and publisher of Karavan Press, and likeminded writers and readers over a cup of coffee – or tea, of course – about anything related to book-writing-editing-publishing-reading. Karavan Press’s home will be open, and I will be ready to answer your questions and discuss your projects.
No need to RSVP. Just ring the bell between 10AM and 12PM on Saturday, 15 February 2025. Coffee and tea will be served. Karavan Press books will be on sale at great prices.
Flash workshops with Kerry Hammerton
Kerry Hammerton, editor of In Other Stories, will be running a few flash workshops this year. Participating authors will have an opportunity to submit their work to her second anthology of flashes.
The first of these takes place on Saturday, 1 February 2025, at the Cape Flats Book Festival and is FREE!
A wonderful opportunity to engage with the form and to attend a great book festival taking place at the same time! The anthology Kerry is compiling will be published by Karavan Press.
Celebrating ‘What Remains’ by Dawn Garisch
Last year was a remarkable year for Karavan Press in all kinds of ways, but specifically in terms of literary awards. Karavan Press authors won five major awards, two of which recognised What Remains by Dawn Garisch. The story collection won the HSS Award for Best Fiction Short Stories and SALA’s Nadine Gordimer Short Story Award in 2024. In order to celebrate this wonderful achievement, we will be relaunching the collection at Exclusive Books Cavendish on Wednesday, 29 January, 5.30 for 6PM. Dawn will be in conversation with Mathapelo Mofokeng. Please join us for the celebration!

We launched Lucienne Argent‘s debut poetry collection, Self-portrait of a Guava, at Kalk Bay Books last night. How lovely to welcome this fresh, beautiful new voice into the local book community! Lucienne was in conversations with Finuala Dowling, her mentor of many years. Thank you both for a wonderful evening of poetic celebrations!
And thank you to everyone who miraculously managed to get through the gridlocked traffic to join us for the occasion. It was a magical evening.

Please join us at The Book Lounge for a celebration of Andrew Brown’s The Bitterness of Olives, winner of the 2024 Sunday Times Fiction Prize.
The Book Lounge is where the story of the publication of this novel with Karavan Press began (join us for the celebration to hear the details) and where the book was officially launched in October last year. Since its publications, The Bitterness of Olives has been offering its readers a deeply empathetic insight into a turbulent history that continues to tragically unfold in front of our eyes. Earlier this month, the bestselling novel has been recognised with the prestigious Sunday Times Fiction Prize.
